Adult Bible Study

In addition to Sunday School, three opportunities exist for regular bible study for adults: Sunday evenings, Monday mornings, and Wednesday evenings.

Disciple Series—Beginning in September of each year and lasting until May, on Sundays at 6:00 p.m., in Chapel Hall, a year-long course of study is offered for interested adults. Led by Dr. Robert Dibble and others, participants build a community where serious intent, personal preparation, and active involvement provide the basis for significant learning.

Joyful Hearts—Women of all ages are invited to participate in a time of Bible Study and fellowship on Mondays, 9:00-10:30 a.m., in the Journey classroom (#102).

Invitation to the Old Testament—This is an eight-week video-based in-depth bible study led by Dan Bagby and Cecil Sherman, meeting on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m., in the Lydia Classrom (#228).

Disciple Series - Sunday Evenings
  • Logo: Disciple bible studyDISCIPLE: REMEMBER WHO YOU ARE is the third study in the four-phase DISCIPLE program and is prepared for those who have completed BECOMING DISCIPLES THROUGH BIBLE STUDY. The title contains the driving idea in this study — the connection between memory and identity as the people of God. The word You in the title is meant to be heard both in its singular form (the individual) and its plural form (the community). We are a community of memory.
  • Participants in this thirty-two week study will read the major and minor Old Testament prophets, with the exception of Daniel, and will read the thirteen Letters traditionally attributed to Paul. To establish the historical context in which the prophets spoke for God, daily reading assignments draw also on the books of Deuteronomy through Chronicles. Study of the Prophets will follow their historical sequence rather than their biblical sequence. The dating of Paul's letters influences the sequence of their study.
  • Several themes weave their way through the study — the call to remember; the call to repentance; the need for renewed vision; and the place of community. The prophets and Paul are continually calling hearers and readers back to their God and to a sense of who they are as a people "set apart." The prophets and the community cannot be separated. The prophets spoke for God, out of the community, and to the community. Paul's experience of the risen Lord, his relationship to the community he addressed, his Jewish traditions, and the Greco-Roman culture of his day merged in his writing of the Letters. Paul used the language of his culture to carry the message that arose out of his roots in the Hebrew Scriptures and Judaism.
Joyful Hearts - Monday Mornings
  • River Road members, Kristina Barbier and Kitty Davis, lead an 8-week study (Sept.21-Nov. 16) on Having a Mary Spirit: Allowing God to Change Us from the Inside Out by Joanna Weaver.
  • Drawing on the stories of biblical Marys and others whose experience with God transformed their lives, Mrs. Weaver challenges today’s women to allow God entrance to their hearts for a “soul-surgery” of sorts.
  • Childcare is provided for those participating in the study. A one-time fee of $20 is collected at the first meeting to defray the cost of books and babysitters.
  • Please call Kitty (285-9782) to sign up. She will be happy to answer any questions.
Invitation to the Old Testament - Wednesday Evenings
  • This study, led by Dan Bagby and Cecil Sherman, approaches the study of Hebrew Scriptures by inviting participants to hear the story of God and God's calling of the people of Israel through the many "voices" of the biblical text.
  • Narrative, poem, history, and prophetic utterance all have their own distinctive characteristics and purpose, arising out of a particular historical, social, and cultural setting. To understand fully the story of God's covenantal relationship with Israel calls for listening to these various ways the story is told throughout the Old Testament.
  • Through this study, participants will be invited to listen afresh to the witness of the Old Testament to hear God's call and purpose for their own lives and respond to that call.
